Shiner Bock
- Brewery: Spoetzl Brewery · Shiner, TX
- Variety: Lager · German Lager · Bock
- Alcohol: ABV 4.40% / ABW 3.52%
- IBU: 13
- Preferred vessel: Bottle
- Color: Light Brown (Dark Lager) (17 SRM)
- Added by Keith Aric Hall
- Last updated by Steve Stedman
The brew only a craftsman like Kosmos Spoetzl, trained in the “Old Country,” could bring to life. With its deep amber color, distinctive rich flavor and full body, Shiner Bock demonstrates the care of a handcrafted brewing process to bring forth a mellow taste free of the bitter aftertaste found in many micro, specialty and imported beers. Just think of it as Shiner smooth.

A smooth beer, almost overburdened with sweetness. Not a very exciting drink by itself, but does complement spicy foods quite nicely. Recommend having this with a fat burrito, salty chips and salsa.

Agree with Anton’s assessment — by itself, unremarkable. Paired with spicy foods (like those you commonly find at a Texas BBQ or Tex-Mex joint), divine.

As an Austinite, I feel somewhat obligated to favorite this. Available just about everywhere in Central Texas. Okay for sipping, but better with food.

I’m a weird case, but I adore Shiner Bock. It’s very easy to drink, especially for people who don’t normally drink a lot of beer (or haven’t developed a palette for beer). It’s certainly a Texan treasure.

Not a fantastic beer, but a sentimental favourite for me, since it means Austin in springtime with thousands of my tribe rampaging around, geeking out, watching films and enjoying live music.

The only thing that comes to mind with this beer is SXSW. This is awesome.
The beer itself… not so awesome, but drinkable (and cheap!).
Not much more to say about this one.

Nothing outstanding, but nothing poor either. A fine, average amber that seems to compliment other flavors, rather than standing on its own.

This is the old reliable for me. Good smooth caramel flavors. I’m partial due to proximity to the brewery. A great bock.

Tasty beer. Not exactly my favorite, but very drinkable. Hard to find on the East Coast, as well. My buddy from Austin usually packs a case in his suitcase when he visits NJ.

Hands down my favorite beer. The taste is refreshing and complements Mexican food very well. It is an easy drink, but does fill. But better than the taste is all the nostalgia! Nothing better than a $5 pitcher at your favorite Texas pizza place with lots of friends.

I associate this beer heavily with SXSW. Only place I have had it, hard to say if I enjoyed it because of the beer itself or the company.

Good, but not great. You really can’t escape Austin without downing a few dozen of these, nor would you want to. It says tex-mex, BBQ, and good times all bottled up in a conveniently sippable package.

My favorite beer any time of the year. Best when casually drinking while enjoying a cookout on a warm day (not too hot!). Great for adding flavor to fajitas and other poultry for grilling. Try it with a Lime next time you have one, you might be surprised!

A good caramel, amber beer that is the staple of the Shiner family (although not the best of them). It pairs better with spicy food, especially with fajitas.

I could see this going well with spicy foods, as some mention. But I had it by itself, where it is mediocre. Still, better than a lot of domestics of its kind.

This is a great beer with spicy food. It doesn’t compete with the fine beers of the world, but in Texas you can usually find it on tap where your other choices are Coors Light and Miller Light. That makes it the closest thing to real beer at the local BBQ joint.

It’s your typical light beer that tastes great because it’s hot as hell outside. If you drank it anywhere in the northern hemisphere in winter, you’d be less apt to think it was wondrous.
