This is a full-bodied stout with plenty of roast flavor as well as hints of molasses and chocolate. Ridiculous amounts of black and caramel malts make this stout smooth, creamy, and utterly opaque.

Coffee, Black, Licorice

A remarkable stout. This stuff pours out so amazingly dark, you’d think it was ink. It looks like a light-body espresso shot, except in this case, the head is light brown. I hold my glass up to a light bulb and still can’t see through it. I notice dark malt aromas with some roasted as well. Definite smells of dark dark chocolate. Taste is smooth, and body pretty cloying. I’m not noticing the coffee flavors as much, but more of the dark chocolate and dark roasted malts. The thick malty body with chocolate characteristics make this beer nice and rich. The lovely aromas and the somewhat intimidating appearance provide for an attractive beer and one impressive stout. Bravo Kalamazoo.

Now that Bell’s is available in SC, I can find out what everyone else knows - Bell’s makes some great beers.

Pours dark black with creamy tan head. Aroma is malty, taste is very malty, very coffee-like and sweet. Coffee taste lingers. Rich and filling - taste leaves you wanting more. As a non-Imperial stout, this is better than some Imperial stouts I’ve had.

Save for the Smuttynose Chai Porter, this is my favorite porter. Lucky to be in Michigan where I can trip over stores that carry it. Yes, I taste the licorice hint every time, and it always makes sense to my brain.

    Characteristics: black coffee licorice
