This beer is based on chemical analysis of pottery fragments found in Honduras which revealed the earliest known alcoholic chocolate drink used by early civilizations to toast special occasions. The discovery of this beverage pushed back the earliest use of cocoa for human consumption more than 500 years to 1200 BC. As per the analysis, Dogfish Head’s Theobroma (translated into ‘food of the gods’) is brewed with Aztec cocoa powder and cocoa nibs (from our friends at Askinosie Chocolate), honey, chilies, and annatto (fragrant tree seeds).

Smell is sweet, immediate mouthfeel is lite and taste is sweet, slightly candy-ish. However, the aftertaste left my tongue feeling slightly warm - likely from the chilies. A very interesting, tasty beer.

Definitely one of the more interesting beer’s I’ve had. Not as heavy or sweet as I was expecting, but has a definite sweet honey taste and a very nice aroma. After the first couple of sips, my whole mouth was warm, but not too hot.
It’s hard to find something to compare it to, but I would get this beer again.

Pours a light red/brown with a quick head & no lacing. Nose of subtle cocoa & honey spice. Flavor is sharp, cocoa sweetness & bitterness combined with the chilies, honey & spices. The finish is spice & alcohol warming. ‘Dogfish Head’ is commended again for using another “Old World” recipe to create a fantastic brew!
