Maharaja is derived from the sanskrit words mahat, - “great” and rajan - “king”. Much like its namesake, this imperial IPA is regal, intense and mighty. With hops and malts as his servants, he rules both with a heavy hand. The Maharaja flaunts his authority over a deranged amount of hops: tangy, vibrant and pungent along with an insane amount of malted barley - fashioning a dark amber hue and exquisite malt essence. This newest Avery Dictator completes the “Dictator Series” joining the likes of The Kaiser & The Czar. Be aware that The Maharaja is a limited release only available for the summer. Welcome to his kingdom! Note: the 2007 version was 9.78%.

This was a marvelous IIPA. I was really intrigued that I didn’t just get slammed with grapefruit aromas and flavors. This had some more complexity, more of that simcoe smell and taste. Very good. The malts were very present and it was just a nice big beer all around.

This is one of my favorite beers ever. Sweet, smooth, creamy, and HUGE hops. If you’re pouring from a bottle, go slow - it’s got a beautiful head on it.
- Characteristics: delicious hoppy smooth sweet

This is one of my favorite DIPAs.
A clear amber with a two finger head. It had more head then it should for this ABV.
Nice hop oil and citrus on the nose. No malts picked up at all.
Creamy and mouth coating. Nice citrus and hoppy bitterness. A c-hair of malt on the finish.
This is a good balance and hid the ABV well. I could drink these all night long.
- Characteristics: balanced citrus creamy

Hoppy and powerful as a DIPA should be with a head that is more liked whipped cream than anything else. It’s a killer of tastebuds, and downing two of these in an hour without eating anything for dinner is a recipe for disaster.

This beer is like putting a bunch of oranges, lemons, and grapefruit into a blender with some hops then drinking it. In a good way. Pours beautifully with a nice head and has a crisp taste that conceals the 10% ABV very well.

Deep golden color. Big citrus hop and malty aroma. Hops throughout melts into a bitter hop finish. Very citrusy and floral. It even gives you a nice warming alcohol tingle at the end.
A very rewarding beer. Big, but balanced. Excellent.

Excellent Ale from Avery - an Imperial IPA with a lot of character. Pours cloudy golden amber with quickly dissipating head and nice lacing. Spicy, grapefruity aroma.
The taste starts out sweet and spicy, with strong hints of grapefruit. Crisp and warming finish. The spiciness and warming sensation lingers. What I like is how the hoppyness overpowers the high alcohol.
About the only bad thing about The Maharaja is that around here in western South Carolina, it’s hard to find.
