Samuel Smith Oatmeal Stout

Brewery: Samuel Smith’s Old Brewery · Tadcaster, North Yorkshire, United Kingdom
Variety: Ale · English Ale · Oatmeal Stout
Alcohol: ABV 5.00% / ABW 4.00%
Preferred vessel: Pint glass
Color: Dark Black (Stout) (35 SRM)
Added by Jeremy Boles

Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

Sweet, Malty, Rich, Bitter, Nuts

Great stout. Balances maltiness, sweetness and hop-bitterness with a bit of creaminess thrown into the mix. Has everything you’d expect from a great stout: coffee, toffee and chocolate. Its a very filling beer, like a meal in a bottle.

One of my all time favorite stouts. Truly defines the genre. Just enough sweetness.

Such a classic beer! I think this really sets the bar for stouts. I love the rich flavors…it’s almost like drinking a toffee candy bar. This could substitute for a great dessert any day. Highly recommended.

Good, classic stout - full and robust. It’s nutty, with a mild bitterness and an underlying hint of sweetness.

I love most stouts, but this…not a fan. The flavors are strong, almost too strong. There’s too much of an oatmeal taste, which can be quite overwhelming. A good beer for some, but not for all.

Very complex, full-flavored beer. Lacks the extreme bitterness of many stouts, making it in some ways more like a porter.

I’d be hard pressed to find a better beer. Typically, ridiculously expensive, but worth every penny.

Stout, of course, the way I like it, yet it has lots of malty flavor. Definitely one of the more dimensional stouts I’ve had. An instant favorite.

Pitch black stout with a huge, tan head. Smokey and sweet on the nose.

Holy cow this beer is delicious. Sweet, smokey, rich, creamy, malty, incredibly smooth. Has a touch of hops but not bitter. Perfect as a dessert beer. This might be the perfect stout.

Last night, I sampled a bottle of Samuel Smith’s Oatmeal stout while reading “Marx in SOHO.” I picked it up from the corner store on my way home. Suffice it to say that I was pleasantly surprised. The $3.99 bottle was worth every penny.

Overall, the beer was hearty, smooth and mildly sweet. The initial rich, malt flavor was nicely balanced by a perfect amount of hops. Neither was overpowering, but the malt definitely took center stage giving it a nice, mild sweetness.

As this is one of the first oatmeal stouts I have tried, it is hard to say how it compares to other oatmeal stouts, but my tastes buds were in heaven. I would highly recommend this to people who like to sip a dark, thick beer after a good meal, or while chatting with friends.

I’ll admit I’m a “typical” girl and I don’t lean towards dark, heavy beer, but I have to admit that I love, love, love this stout. It is just heavy enough that I can drink more than one bottle without feeling extremely full. The flavors are robust - including coffee and chocolate. The beer was sweet and smooth. I’ll be drinking this as desert from now on… :) No complainants besides not having another bottle to follow!

Not overly heavy, but with enough flavor to keep you happy. The nuttiness and oatmeal flavor come through nicely and are enjoyable, especially since you don’t come across oatmeal stouts that often.

Good stout, although it lacks the longer-term “drinkability” of other cleaner stouts. It has an interesting bitter hint, and isn’t as meaty as some other stouts I’ve had, but still stands strong.
