Drank this one from the bottle. It’s pretty spicy. Has a pretty strong ginger taste, but it’s not overpowering. I drank it with some spicy Thai curry and it went with that pretty well. Not bad at all.

This beer was not as light as I’d expected, having a more copper color that was a bit hazy. The haze didn’t reflect a wheaty taste. On pouring there’s a bit of head, much like a soda, but no head retention.
It has a surprisingly tart aroma followed by coriander and citrus. The initial taste also has a tang like a Flanders Brown, slightly fruity and tart.
The ginger flavor is present, but more savory than spicy, and there’s no real ginger hotness. I noted a definite metallic taste that all the Hitachino Nest beers have. The carbonation is a little rough, like a soda, though it calms as the beer warms.
On warming there’s a noticeable alcohol aroma and flavor, and the taste of the beer becomes more savory than tart. It’s an interesting beer, but I’m not sure I’d pay over $4.50 for it again.

I have a full review of this beer with photos available at: http://beer47.com/2009/04/kiuchi-hitachino-nest…
Here is a brief synopsis: Appearance. This beer has a foamy but not frothy yellow-white head and does not leave much foam on the glass. This beer is hazy, which might be expected of an herb/spice beer, and has an amber or dark honey color.
Smell. Real Ginger Brew has a ginger aroma like that of ginger ale or ginger beer, which is a sweet smooth ginger smell. The bouquet is spicy with a bit of cloves and is enhanced by the ginger while accompanied by a light fruitiness.
Taste. The most pronounced taste of this beer is sweet malty ginger. Backing the ginger beer flavor is a sweet maltiness that is complemented with a touch of smooth hop bitterness. As you drink more of this brew the spiciness of the ginger builds but not so much that is it overpowering.
Mouthfeel. Real Ginger Brew is well carbonated, which adds to the comparison to ginger ale, and is a medium-light bodied beer. Drinkability. This beer is strong in alcohol content and strong in ginger flavor. On one hand it is crisp and refreshing like a ginger ale but also like a ginger ale I rarely want more than one.

This was definitely one of the more interesting beers that I’ve had. I ordered it because my friends went out to a bar, but I had a bit of a stomachache and figured the ginger would help. The ginger flavor is very strong, but not in the overpowering way like when you eat pickled ginger. The beer itself was rather bubbly and a good golden color. I might order it again if I wanted something kind of wacky.

I was really looking forward to this brew. I love ginger and beer. I also love ginger mixes added to lagers; however, this beer had a very strange flavor. Not what I was expecting - which maybe part of the problem. I was expecting a ginger flavor and there really wasn’t one.
- Characteristics: bitter dull
