Guinness is a popular dry stout that originated in Arthur Guinness’ brewery at St. James’s Gate in Dublin, Ireland. The beer is based on the porter style that originated in London in the early 18th century. It is one of the most successful beer brands in the world, being exported worldwide. The distinctive feature in the flavour is the roasted barley which remains unfermented. For many years a portion of the beer was aged to give a sharp lactic flavour, but Guinness has refused to confirm if this still occurs. The thick creamy head is the result of the beer being mixed with nitrogen when being served. It is extremely popular with the Irish and, in spite of a decline in consumption over recent years, is the best-selling alcoholic drink of all time in Ireland.

Guinness was my favorite beer for a long time. Love the smooth, rich (yet remarkably light) taste and feel. Goes down so easy, feels good to sip, looks dead sexy in the pint glass. Oh, and I love the brand (and don’t discount how that effects how you like a beer!)
Now, though, I prefer Murphy’s as my “go to” Irish stout. I just find it smoother and tastier. :) Having said that, I’ve never had either anywhere but in the states, and I guess we’re not getting the real deal. Will have to fly to Ireland before I can do a real review!

I kind of consider this the stout with training wheels. There is lots going on but it’s a pretty safe beer, not too bitter , chocolate … I find it best drunk at room temperature or just slightly chilled.

Very approachable guinness. Dark with creamy tan head. Nice small bubbles. Plenty of toasted malts, but the creamy texture makes it inoffensive. I’d like to see something more complex but I realize that’s not what they’re going for.

My “go to” beer but will only drink it on tap. I love tasting new beers but I have a hard time passing up a pint of Guinness with a nice big head on it. Pairs amazingly (and not surpassingly) well with a big Shepherd’s Pie at my local Irish Pub.

Hands down, this is probably my favorite beer. Love at first sip.
Always best to drink Guinness from the tap at your favorite pub, but is also good from the bottle as long as you drink it in a pint glass.
Creamy, smooth consistency really helps make this an all around great drinking experience.

This is a great beer, and for good reason. It looks a little intimidating, but once you put one sip away it is clear why this beer is a classic. Although dark and heavy looking, the head is smooth and light, with nice chocolate smooth finish. Now go and mix it with half of a Blue Moon and have yourself a Black-n-Blue

I am torn on Guinness. From a Tap in Ireland it was like magic in a glass, smooth and creamy without a hint of bitterness but from a bottle or tap in the states (or even in London) it seems to pick up a bitter aftertaste that is offputting. Like many beers Guinness is always better on tap than from a bottle or can. However, if the tapping system isn’t just right the beer can really turn on you in a hurry.

i’ve been in love with this almost since the first time i had it. after hearing the jokes about how “drinking a pint of guinness is like eating a sandwich,” it began to grow on me. part of its appeal is that thickness, which after a pint or two seems not even noticeable, for those who mind it.
i find it best from a tap or poured into a glass, because the little plastic bullet in the bottle freaks me out. finding out that a bar doesn’t serve guinness is always the saddest moment of my night.

A great beer. Nothing complicated, but simple, flavorful, and satisfying. Actually a great all-night beer because it’s light and relatively low in alcohol. Make sure you get it from a bar that will take it’s time at the tap. A true Guinness pour should take at least a few minutes.
Also, a great mixer with other beers/ciders.

Love, love, love Guinness Draught! :)
Where some versions of Guinness can taste a bit bitter and as strong as they look, the draught version seems absolutely spot-on for a stout, creamy and highly-drinkable.
Originally, I used to abuse drinking this wonderful beer - my ‘warm-up’ drink for nights-out for awhile (first 6-10 pints of the night!)…and I used to drink it fast too! What a waste! These days though, I really do take my time a bit more with Guinness Draught…(still goes down well though, hehe!)

Will happily order a Guinness if the beer list isn’t overly interesting. There are better options, sure, but as a fallback Guinness is always a great choice. Creamy and smooth, with a nice toasted flavour.
(Though it should be noted that there’s a huge difference between Guinness from a pub that knows how to pour it well, and Guinness from a floating widget can. The latter gets a significantly lower rating.)

Not bad on tap, but nothing special, either. Great appearance, but a boring malt character (think watered-down roasted malt, hint of espresso beans) and an equally uninteresting aroma. The mouthfeel is good and somewhat creamy on tap, but is still a little thin for what I’d consider a good stout.
Overall, it’s a good choice for restaurants where all else you’d find is Budweiser/Miller products, but nothing worth seeking out or foregoing a different beer of its style.

Guinness used to be my all-time favorite beer. These days, I’m less sure…and the reason for that is that (in my experience) it varies greatly from place to place. Also, I don’t really care for it out of a bottle or can. I’m pretty confident, though, that if/when I grab a pint of Guinness in Ireland, it will once again reign supreme as my favorite beer of all time. It will always be one of my favorites, regardless.

There’s something about a Guinness that either captivates or repels you, (and that something changes depending on who you ask) it is just that sort of brew. The thing that I enjoy most is the presentation of a properly poured pint. I enjoy the middle of the pint the most, where the beer warms just a little bit and that seems to really enhance the flavor.

Acceptable beer and considered a classic by many.
Nothing special and horribly over hyped, but one can do worse.
What flavor it has is good, it just doesn’t have much of it. Very watery all in all and a far cry from the superior (yet less popular) Guinness Extra Stout.
I won’t completely dog it.. I’ll drink a Guinness draft on occasion… having said that, with stouts like Rogue Shakespeare, Bell’s Expedition, Samuel Smith’s Imperial/Oatmeal and Stone Russian Imperial.. there are clearly better out there.

Smooth and chocolaty. Real smooth, tasty, and drinkable stout for an everyday sipper. A little thin, that may be from the nitro though I’m not sure.

Guinness is dependable. It’s inoffensive (for me anyway), and is my favourite of the mass market beers. I like it best with seafood, on the west coast of Ireland.

I agree with some of the reviewers above. Though Guinness is very smooth, it’s almost too smooth. It felt a lttle thin, and after the thick cramy head dissipated, there wasn’t much there. I guess after trying some of the Imperial Stouts that are out there, Guinness is, as some of my colleagues above have said, boring.

Not an every day type of beer, you have to be in the mood; however it is surprisingly light for its color and goes down with no great fuss. A good Tap Temp and pour make a world of difference. One of my old standards, but worth it if done right.

This is fantastic on tap in Ireland. One of the most comforting, rich, creamy and delicious things you can ask for.
In the states, I have a very mixed experience with it. On tap, it’s decent, but not amazing. In the bottles/cans I feel like the foaming thing they stick at the bottom gives it a chemical aftertaste.

Last night I introduced a Car Bomb to an Irish woman. I was told, “We don’t fuck with our Guinness, we don’t fuck with our Jameson’s, and Bailey’s is for little girls.” She liked it anyway.

My love of Guinness has waned over the years. I still like but I find it not as complex now. Kinda bland. Maybe it’s just too familiar. Don’t know. Had it in Dublin and the magic just wasn’t there anymore.

Great beer in its own right. Some days, I’m just in the mood for a Guinness and will get it, regardless, but in general I think it really shines when the beer list is not incredibly exciting. It is, of course, best when it comes from a good tap.

Guinness, the Irish stout, derives its thick creamy head from the beer mixing with nitrogen during the traditional two-step pour. I’ve been know to send a Guinness back if it isn’t poured correctly.
