Pours to a nice deep russet with a thin head. It’s sort of sweet, with a very light toasted nut flavor and a bit of a hop nip at the end. The mouthfeel was thin and watery. Finished a bit flat with a slightly funky aftertaste. It’s not bad, really, it’s pretty light so it’d make a decent session beer, but it’s not all that good either.

Frankly not as good as it used to be, when the brewery was based in Newcastle (it’s now in Gateshead). I used to drink this exclusively when I was a student. Tasting it recently it’s quite a bit more sweet and hoppy than I remember, much like an American ale.

Agree with Clagnut: the Dog’s gone downhill a little bit in recent years.
Batches have certainly always varied in both flavour and quality. And having grown up in Newcastle with Dog being the staple session ale, I recall the odd genuinely ‘bad-bottle’ producing some colourful results.
I also remember the general rule of thumb was to avoid Dog on tap.
Always best served slightly chilled with a half-pint glass for frequent head-maintaining top-ups.

A common beer, but better than other domestics (its brewed in the states folks). If not served ice cold it can leave an after taste. A good first ‘dark’ beer for people accustomed to lighter fare. Also, I perfer it in a bottle than from the Tap. Additionally, it can be hit or miss in flavor, varying wildly each time I drink it. Its for this reason that I usually go for something else when I see it, but when its good its really good - but the last few times I had it it tasted kind of skunky, and not in a good way.

I drank this regularly at one particular pub during one particular time in my life, so it’s hard to separate the drink itself from my life.
But maybe I don’t have to?
This ale is for three friends in a dark basement pub, alternating between this and Guinness. Late nights, passive smoking, and toasts to not going home.
Personally I wouldn’t drink it any other way, but it happily got me drunk without being unpleasant on the way.
