From Paulaner: Paulaner Salvator, with its strong, typically malty flavour, is what you could call the “original” Paulaner. The bottom-fermented “Doppelbock” beer combines the finest hops and dark barley malt. The Paulaner monks used to drink Salvator as a food substitute during Lent. The most famous master brewer was Frater Barnabas, who took over the Paulaner monastery brewery in 1773. His original recipe remains practically unchanged to this day. In order to preserve the original, Paulaner registered the name “Salvator” with the patent office in 1896.

Nice orange/red color with a small yet nice tan head. The flavor is rich, very malty, full of caramel and a light hint of fruit. Sort of tastes like Christmas. It’s a also very smooth, if maybe a touch sirupy, with not much carbonation. I really like this, it’s more of a sipper, something to savor…
- Characteristics: Christmas desert malty rich smooth sweet

Aroma: Sweet, malty aroma with caramel and hints of raison. Little or no hop aroma.
Appearance: Clear, light amber color on the light side of style. Low head retention also good for style.
Flavor: Very rich malt and caramel. Warming with some alcohol spiciness. Low hop flavor but balanced. Finishes dry.
Mouthfeel: Nice warming feel, low to med carbonation, smooth and full bodied
Overall: Rich and beautiful example of the style.

I admit upfront that my review of the Salvator is biased. It is the beer that really made me fall in love with beer, that showed me what beer could be. As such, I can’t be trusted with this particular recommendation.
Are there better beers? Certainly. There are also many, many lesser beers.
I think my brother best described the Salvator as “drinking three different beers at once.” If that sort of complexity and adventure in a glass appeals to you, chances are you’ll like the Salvator as its a fine Doppelboch.
- Characteristics: complex rich semi-sweet smooth finish

We have been doing “unscientific” beer tastings after work on Saturday evenings, and this is the clear winner (so far anyway) in the dopplebock category. Amazing body and taste for a lager (I’m usually an Ale guy). Spaten Optimator is easier to find in my area, and is a close second to the Salvator.
- Characteristics: dark amber full-mouthfeel high abv nutty
