Westmalle Dubbel is a dark, reddish-brown Trappist beer with a secondary fermentation in the bottle. The creamy head has the fragrance of special malt and leaves an attractive lace pattern in the glass. The flavour is rich and complex, herby and fruity with a fresh-bitter finish. It is a balanced quality beer with a soft feel in the mouth and a long, dry aftertaste.

Pours to a beautiful dark brown with a very nice thick head. Oh oh, this is good. Nice and smooth, much lighter than I’d expected, given the amazing dark coloring. It’s got a wonderfully complex flavor, almost like roasted fruit. Sweet, but not too sweet, with lots of spice to round it out. Very well balanced.

This is one of my favourite beers. It’s what I drink when I’m not in the mood for red wine. Enough flavour to be exciting, but balanced enough to be comforting and relaxing.

A friend brought me back some of this from Belgium. I really enjoyed it but would find it quite difficult to drink more than one or two at a time as it is so rich and high in alcohol.

Roasty and fruity with a nice robust feel, this was easily the most memorable beer I drank in Belguim. It became the go-to in each city after sampling the locals.
Read the other reviews. “Complex” is right.

A wonderful Trappist ale. This is the darker of the Westmalle beers, and has a rich, strong flavor.
