The Kasteel bruin, aged 10 years. This beer has nice, subtle caramel tones which make for a soft and slightly bitter aftertaste.

    Comment:

I struggle to age beers myself: for one, I’m only 23 and have only been enjoying beer for a little less than 3 years now; for another, it’s difficult for me to resist the calls of a delicious brew, beckoning, begging to be drank…

…okay, this is turning into beer porn. I’ll stop now.

The Cuvée du Chateau is basically Kasteel’s bruin aged for 10 years; quite a rare treat, especially in draft form.

Smelled of—strangely enough—black cherries, with a hints of vanilla and various spices. Tasted much like it smelled, though the cherries were very subdued, and the spices rose to prominence. The bitterness of the cinnamon and nutmeg playfully tumbled around my mouth, balancing well with the vanilla and dark fruit. There was a mild woody aftertaste, probably imbued by the barrels that this delicious brew was aged in for so long.

It was a completely different experience than the Bruin itself. Very highly recommended!

On tap at Churchkey in the Logan Circle neighborhood of Washington, DC.

    Characteristics: bittersweet
